Aid in identifying sources of funding for sustainability initiatives at Grange Primary School.
Hold committee meetings to discuss, research, seek additional advice, analyse and make sustainability recommendations to the Governing Council.
Who we are
The Sustainability Subcommittee is endorsed by the School’s Governing Council and School Leaders. It is made up of passionate staff and parents who want to inspire sustainability ideas and projects within the student community.
The ‘Grange Green Beans’ are the student representatives from all year levels that voluntarily give up several lunch playtimes per term to plan and complete projects that they decide are most beneficial for the school community and their local environment.
How we’re making a difference
The sustainability committee with the Grange Green Beans are part of Eco Schools and have completed an Eco Schools audit which identified key areas that GPS is excelling and areas of opportunity for improved sustainability.
We’re also involved with the Junior Landcare initiative and the Green Adelaide Sustainable Schools Program which provide education resources and opportunities for grant funding.
What we’ve done
Grange PS Garden
Thanks to an amazing amount of work led by one of our Teaching Staff, Daniel Murdoch, we’ve established an incredible fruit and vegetable garden that is open every every lunch time for children to play and explore with their green thumb.
Greenhill Living visit
Rebecca Mumford from Greenhill Living visited the school in late 2023 to educate the children about healthy eating and growing your own food with the Year 1 classes. A Food Security grant was secured from the Department of Education, to fund further incursions in 2024 to include our Reception to Year 1 classes.
Kitchen Caddies
We’ve introduced green waste caddies to every classroom which the children are responsible for taking to our garden daily to help feed our worms and plants.
New Bin System
The Department of Education has asked schools to introduce a more sustainable bin system that enables more waste items to be recycled. GPS has now completed an education campaign within the school and introduced this new system which fits in with our Eco School audit goals.
Plant Trees
We’ve successfully had our first actively applying for grants to repopulate our open spaces with native trees to provide an inviting natural environment for our students and our local bird population. We received a grant from Planet Ark for our National School’s Tree Planting Day in 2024.
